A meeting organised by the Ministry of Planning and National Development to share and disseminate the main findings of the second country report on Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) was held at the Faculty of Education on 12 August 2007. The meeting was attended by the senior staff from Ministry of Planning and National Development, other government ministries and UN agencies.

At this meeting Dr. Simad Saeed and Mr. Ahmed Afaal presented the status for the first seven MDG’s and challenges to address the targets by 2015. The presentation was followed by a discussion session where questions and issues were raised.

The Maldives has most successfully achieved targets income poverty, of net enrolment of girls and boys in the secondary education, reduced child and infant mortality and improved maternal health. The most challenging issues to address in achieving MDG’s include nutritional status of children, access to improved sanitation, and regional disparities in income poverty. Work is in progress to launch the second country report on the MDG’s.
